Edirne has a rich inventory for Cultural Heritage.Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling,Hıdrellez Festival,Bocuk Night Celebrations, Martenitsa,Edirne Tiles,broom with a mirror,fruit soap and cloth doll and Edirnekari art are our cultural heritage.

As the most ancient sports organizations  of the world,the Kırkpınar tops the list as a faithful  guardian of the traditional and cultural values of our city and country with its 7 century long history.




Hıdrellez is another celebration day on which the Prophets Al-Khidr and Elijah met on earth according to belief of Turks.Also the arrival of spring is celebrated.Hıdrellez starts on May 5 night and falls on May 6.People pray on this day whatever  their wishes are. They make symbols with stone or draw their wishes.The other ritual of Hıdrellez is The Kakava Festivals  organized every year in Edirne start with Kakava fire sets on May 6. Lots of people attend the rituel and they jump over the fire and they throw their votive candles in the river.



For Bocuk Night celebration, people wear  white costumes and cover themselves with a white cloth,paint their faces in scary make up, eat pumpkin,corn, cauliflower  to celebrate being together with different communities and have fun.



Martenitsa ,red and white bracelet,is a small piece of adornment,made of white and red yarn and worn from March 1 until the appearance of first blooming tree or the first stork. The tradition is that when a person who wears martenitsa see blooming tree to tie it on a branch.





Edirne was one of the important centers of tile art in Ottoman Empire.These arts survive as giftware today.







Mirror decorated brom symbolizing chastity and versatility of maiden and put into their hope box in order to bring sake,is an important piece of Edirne culture.Mirror is the symbol of the beauty and delicasy of young women.




With a history extending to Edirne Palace,the fruit soap art continues to be produced in Edirne as an example of traditional crafts.Soaps given the fruit shape are painted and used for decorative purposes.



Cloth doll is one of the ha n eyes and traditional dresses special to Edirne are produced as giftware.

Applied by craftsmen in Edirne for the first time,thus named as ‘Edirnekari’is a decorative art used on the interior decoration of architecture works as well as applied on the surface of wooden,cardboard,and the leather goods.This art with a 600 years of history is applied to many wooden objects today.
